We interviewed the Chinese director of the UNLP Confucius Institute Li Fang Jun, who coordinated the teaching of Chinese language in a virtual or digital way to students from all over the country from our city of La Plata due to the global pandemic of COVID-19.

P- How they organized the Chinese Language courses?
(¿Cómo organizaron los cursos de idioma chino?)

LFJ- Basically, we organized the Chinese Language courses the same way we organized them in the face-to-face situation. We offer 12 courses at different levels ranging from Chino 1 to Chino 6 to satisfy the needs of students with different Chinese Language proficiency. We also consider the needs of the students who have to work by offering Chino 1, Chino 2 and Chino 3 on Saturday, exclusively for those who cannot make it during the week. All the courses of the fall semester are delivered online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

(Básicamente, organizamos los cursos de idioma chino de la misma manera que los organizamos en la situación cara a cara. Ofrecemos 12 cursos en diferentes niveles que van desde Chino 1 a 6 para satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes con diferentes conocimientos del idioma chino. También consideramos las necesidades de los estudiantes que tienen que trabajar ofreciendo Chino 1, Chino 2 y Chino 3 el sábado, exclusivamente para aquellos que no pueden asistir durante la semana. Todos los cursos del semestre de otoño se entregan en línea debido a la pandemia de COVID-19).

P-What applications or networks do they use?
(¿Qué aplicaciones o redes usan?)

LFJ- Our teachers mainly use Zoom to teach synchronously, but other than this they also employ WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube and email, etc. to supplement their teaching and to interact with the students.

(Nuestros maestros utilizan principalmente Zoom para enseñar sincrónicamente, pero aparte de esto también emplean WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube y correo electrónico, entre otras aplicaciones, para complementar su enseñanza e interactuar con los estudiantes).

P-How did the students receive the dictation of the online classes?
(¿Cómo recibieron los estudiantes el dictado de las clases en línea?)

LFJ- So far, the students have been doing great. They participate in the class enthusiastically and actively.

(Hasta ahora, los estudiantes han estado muy bien. Participan en la clase con entusiasmo y de manera activa).

P-How many students and levels of Chinese do teachers of the Confucius Institute UNLP teach?
(¿Cuántos estudiantes y niveles de chino enseñan los maestros del Instituto Confucio UNLP?)

LFJ- There are 210 students who have registered this semester, and we offer 6 levels of Chinese Language courses for them. Besides, we offer an online course entitled "Practical Chinese" for the master's program of Chinese Studies, a free public course on Chinese Art of Paper Cut, and Chinese Grammar, HSK2 preparation tips on Facebook.

Además, ofrecemos un curso en línea titulado "Chino Práctico" para el programa de maestría de Estudios Chinos, un curso público gratuito sobre Arte Chino de Recorte de Papel y gramática china, consejos de preparación HSK2 en Facebook).

P- Since you are working at the Confucius Institute of La Plata. What differences can you see in the teaching of classes between China and Argentina?
(Desde que está trabajando en el Instituto Confucio de La Plata. ¿Qué diferencias puede observar en el dictado de clases entre China y Argentina?)

LFJ-Good question! Thanks to modern education technology, I am now able to attend all the classes of our Confucius Institute as an auditor or observer at any time. I have found the major differences in two aspects: 1) In terms of the class size, the classes are much smaller here in Argentina than those in China, especially the classes at higher levels; therefore, students in Argentina have more opportunities of interaction in class. 2) Most of the Argentine students study mainly out of personal interest while Chinese students study for exams; therefore, Argentine students feel happy and satisfied when they understand what they learn, but Chinese students tend to memorize lots of things (by reading aloud, reciting, chanting and rote memory).

(¡Buena pregunta! Gracias a la tecnología educativa moderna ahora puedo asistir en cualquier momento a todas las clases de nuestro Instituto Confucio como auditor u observador. He encontrado las principales diferencias en dos aspectos: en primer lugar en el tamaño de las clases. Vi que las clases son mucho más reducidas aquí en Argentina que en China, especialmente las clases en niveles superiores. Por lo tanto los estudiantes en Argentina tienen más oportunidades de interactuar con el profesor .Y en segundo lugar observé que la mayoría de los estudiantes argentinos estudian principalmente por interés personal, mientras que los estudiantes chinos estudian para los exámenes; por lo tanto, los estudiantes argentinos se sienten felices y satisfechos cuando entienden lo que aprenden, pero los estudiantes chinos tienden a memorizar muchas cosas leyendo en voz alta, recitando y cantando).

P-This week you have just participated in a CRICAL conference, on the dictation of virtual or digital classes, how are classes taught in other Confucius Institutes in Latin America?
(Esta semana acaba de participar en una conferencia CRICAL, sobre el dictado de clases virtuales o digitales, ¿cómo se imparten las clases en otros Institutos Confucio de América Latina?)

LFJ-To ensure that all the Confucius Institutes in Latin America and the Caribbean are prepared for online instruction in the situation of the Covid-19 pandemic, CRICAL organized three seminars in Spanish, Portuguese and English for the local directors and Chinese directors between April 27-29. On April 30, a fourth seminar followed up immediately, and it was organized in Chinese for the Chinese directors to address the problems and difficulties that exist in online instruction. This follow-up session proved to be a very good opportunity for us to share ideas, plans, experiences and even resources with other Confucius Institutes.
To further ensure the effect of online instruction, CRICAL also organized an 8-week teacher training between May 1 and June 19. Every Friday evening at 9 o'clock (Argentine time) , an online lecture is given by an authoritative scholar in the field of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. This training is very well received by over 250 the local teachers and Chinese teachers in Latin America and the Caribbean.

(Para garantizar que todos los Institutos Confucio en América Latina y el Caribe estén preparados para la instrucción en línea en esta situación de pandemia del Covid-19 el CRICAL organizó tres seminarios en español, portugués e inglés dirigidos a los directores locales y chinos los días 27, 29 y 30 de abril. Y, un cuarto seminario que fue seguidamente de los anteriores que organizó en chino para que los directores chinos aborden los problemas y dificultades que existen en la instrucción en línea. Este último seminario demostró ser una muy buena oportunidad para compartir ideas, planes, experiencias e incluso recursos con otros Institutos Confucio.
Para garantizar aún más el efecto de la instrucción en línea el CRICAL también organizó una capacitación docente de 8 semanas que se llevó a cabo entre el 1º de mayo y el 19 de junio. Entonces, todos los viernes por la noche a las 9.00PM (hora Argentina), un académico autorizado en el campo imparte una conferencia en línea sobre enseñar chino a hablantes de otros idiomas. Esta capacitación fue muy bien recibida por más de 250 maestros locales, es decir de otros países de latinoamericana, incluida Argentina, y chinos que se encuentran en América Latina y el Caribe).

P- What would you recommend to a student who wants to study Chinese?
(¿Qué le recomendaría a un estudiante que quiere estudiar chino?)

LFJ-Study with a teacher! This way you will have the language environment in which you will find yourself being pushed forward, and you will make more rapid progress.
(¡Que estudie con un profesor chino, preferentemente! De esta forma se verá empujado hacia adelante y avanzará más rápidamente.)

P- And what are the cultural and teaching method differences in both contexts, Chinese and Argentine, which you can mention?
(Y ¿cuáles son las diferencias culturales y de métodos de enseñanza en ambos contextos, chino y argentino, que puede mencionar?)

LFJ-The Chinese Language is so different from Spanish or English, so when you learn Chinese you'd better learn about Chinese culture a the same time. Once you understand Chinese culture better, you will learn the Chinese language faster.
(El idioma chino es muy diferente del español o el inglés, por lo que cuando aprendes chino es mejor que aprendas sobre la cultura china al mismo tiempo. Una vez que –el alumno- comprenda mejor la cultura china, aprenderá el idioma chino más rápido).
P- Due to the spread of Covid 19 throughout the world, both in China and Argentina, we changed the method of teaching classes; they went from being face-to-face to being virtual or digital. What benefits and difficulties do you see between the different methods? Something you want to mention or highlight.
(Debido a la difusión de Covid 19 en todo el mundo, tanto en China como en Argentina, cambiamos el método de impartir clases, pasaron de ser presenciales a ser virtuales o digitales. ¿Qué beneficios y dificultades ves entre los diferentes métodos? Algo que quieras mencionar o resaltar.)

LFJ- Online learning has already exhibited its own strengths and advantages. At this moment, it enables you to continue your learning while keeping you healthy and safe. It also saves you a lot of time because you do not have to travel between home and school anymore. If you are a shy person who feels uncomfortable to speak in public, you will feel much less tension or anxiety in the virtual learning environment than in a face-to-face classroom setting.

(El aprendizaje en línea ya ha exhibido sus propias fortalezas y ventajas. En este momento, al alumno le permite continuar su aprendizaje mientras lo mantiene saludable y seguro. También le ahorra mucho tiempo porque ya no tiene que viajar entre el hogar y la escuela o institución educativa. Si eres una persona tímida que se siente incómoda para hablar en público, sentirás mucha menos tensión o ansiedad en el entorno virtual de aprendizaje que en un aula presencial).
